Neoprene and latex cuff with skull
Neoprene or latex cuff?

Choosing the material of your neck and sleeve cuffs is almost as complicated as choosing the material of your dry diving suit. Just like neoprene or trilaminate on the body, the material on the neck and arms has its advantages and disadvantages. We see more latex cuffs in dive shops, so let's start with those:

The latex cuff should be very flexible, retain its elasticity even in the cold and should not restrict the user's breathing or blood circulation. Gluing, not sewing, is used for installation on diving suits.

Advantages: easy and quick donning, elasticity and flexibility, 100% tightness at the right size, can be used for multiple users (e.g. in a rental shop).

Disadvantages: the need for regular inspection and maintenance. Need for a good hood and gloves as latex does not insulate. In case of neglected maintenance or old age, there is a risk of tearing, which is very difficult to repair in field conditions.

The neoprene cuff should be as flexible as possible, with only one seam. The sleeve cuffs and neck cuff should be installed on the suit with the fabric inwards, as they fold inwards with the elastic when used and the combination of pressure and sealing surface will prevent water ingress.

Advantages: they insulate against the cold, do not pinch and are pleasant on the skin. Properly made and installed, the cuffs are very durable and can be repaired in expedition conditions if damaged.

Disadvantages: it is necessary to choose and adjust the size very carefully, otherwise the cuffs leak. When putting on, the cuffs must be folded and adjusted exactly to the body. Folding and compression must be avoided during storage. Limited use for small necks and hands, the stretchability of neoprene is many times less than latex.

Experience shows that latex cuffs are more suitable for leisure divers, neoprene cuffs for working divers or divers doing long dives.

It is good to have a good quality hood (for example our Quick hood system) and gloves with latex cuffs. It is a good idea to get rather universal sleeve rings, as they usually allow you to correct cuff failure.
